How do I check that a surgeon is really certified?
A badge on a website is an image, and an image can be copied. That is why the RibXcar badge always carries a verification link back to a page on this site, cryptographically signed for that one surgeon. Three steps:
- Click the badge on the surgeon's website. If it leads nowhere, it is not authentic, however closely it may resemble one.
- Check that the link lands on this site and that the name on the verification page is the surgeon you are consulting.
- Check the validity. Certification lasts twelve months. The verification page states whether it is still current or has expired.
If something does not add up, write to directorio@ribxcar.org. A badge that does not link to a verification page on this site accredits nothing.
What does this certification attest, and what does it not?
It attests that the surgeon took and passed the official training in the rib remodeling (RibXcar) technique at AX Scientific Lab, and the year they obtained it.
It does not attest — and this matters as much as the above — a medical specialty. It does not replace the professional licensure granted by the medical board or council in each country, it does not endorse any individual surgeon's results, and it does not imply supervision by Dr. Manzaneda over their clinical practice. First of all, verify that your surgeon is a board-certified plastic surgeon with the authority in your country. Certification in the technique comes after that, not instead of it.
Why is the directory shorter than the number of surgeons trained?
Because being trained is not the same as being certified and current. Many more surgeons have passed through the academy than appear here, for three reasons: certification expires after twelve months and must be renewed; it is revocable if the terms are breached; and nobody is listed without having authorised it expressly in writing.
A short directory is not a weakness: it is what happens when the standard is applied.
What should I ask at the consultation?
- Whether they are board certified in plastic surgery in their country, and their licence number.
- How many rib remodeling procedures they have performed, and since when.
- Whether they work with ultrasound guidance. It is not a detail: it is what allows the pleura to be located during the procedure.
- Which surgical facility they operate in, and with which anaesthesia team.
- Ask them to explain what complications the technique carries. They are published: the main one is pneumothorax.
Every surgeon in the directory receives a verifiable certification badge for their own website. The badge attests to training in the technique and is not a specialty certification: the exact scope, the twelve-month validity and the grounds for revocation are set out in the badge terms.
